Alonso hints at Real Madrid exit with Liverpool waiting

Posted on April 22, 2013 by admin

The Spanish international midfielder Xabi Alonso has a contract with Real Madrid until next summer, but it is far from certain whether he will complete it. The 31-year old may be waiting to see what happens at the club in the summer, which itself could depend on the outcome of the remaining games this season.

Alonso spent five seasons in the English Premier League with Liverpool and it has been suggested that he could return there to finish his career. He was, apparently, happy at the club and only left after his relationship with Rafa Benitez, who was the manager at the time, deteriorated following his decision to miss a game to attend the birth of his first child. There are also reports that Benitez could be re-appointed as Liverpool manager and that may also have some bearing on Alonso’s decision.

Whether Jose Mourinho is in charge of Real Madrid next season could affect whether Alonso decides to stay, and that could be down to the club’s success at trying to win the 10th European cup, along with the Copa Del Rey for good measure.

“I haven’t yet decided my future,” revealed Alonso. “I am signed to Real Madrid until 2014 and that is my situation.”

Alonso has been fantastic for Madrid since joining back in 2009. He has played nearly 200 games and his experience has been invaluable. He would be a very hard player to replace, so let’s hope that the club officials and manager, whoever that may be, can convince him to extend his contract and stay on.
