Alonso return from injury will steady Real Madrid ship

You can tell just how important Xabi Alonso is to Real Madrid, at least in the eyes of the coach Carlo Ancelotti. Despite only playing around 10 minutes of competitive football since being sidelined with injury last season, at the end of Wednesday’s game against Sevilla, the midfielder will be thrown right in from the start of tomorrow’s game away to Rayo Vallecano.

Ancelotti said, “Xabi will start. I don’t know whether he will play the whole 90 minutes, but he will start.”

He also suggested that it will be Illarramendi who misses out, although I would have thought that Khedira was more at risk, because his lack of discipline was probably the reason for Madrid’s poor defensive display in the demolition of Sevilla. Despite it being a thumping win, the manager was clearly not amused by his team’s blase attitude towards keeping a clean sheet, and Alonso has the experience and self control to put that right.

With Bale and Benzema now firing and helping the a;ways brilliant Cristiano Ronaldo, the attacking side of the game is not really a concern, so if Madrid can tighten up at the back, we are going to be awesome. The young centre back Rafael Varane has picked up a little knock, so he will not start, but he is in the squad so it is just a precaution. Still, with Ramos, Pepe, Arbeloa, Marcelo and Alonso in front of them, surely Ancelotti will get the clean sheet he wants.
