Atlético Madrid vs Real Madrid Preview, Possible Lineups & Prediction

Posted on February 07, 2015 by Admin2

The sixth Madrid derby of the season takes place at the Vicente Calderón Stadium on Saturday and Real Madrid are yet to win one this season. Although the derby tables have completely turned on their head since Diego Simeone took over at Atletico, there is still plenty of expectation amongst fans and a high demand for Real Madrid tickets ahead of this game.

People still expect Madrid to win, regardless of their injuries and poor form.

It’s not all about Real though – Atlético Madrid are in need of a win to keep their slim title defence chances alive, heading into this weekend seven points behind the league leaders.

Real Madrid have lost both previous visits here this season, in the Super Cup and the Copa del Rey, whilst have drawn two and lost the other of their three home matches to their local rivals.

Team News

Atlético Madrid

Cristian Ansaldi has returned from injury and could displace Guilherme Siqueira at left-back.

Gabi is back from suspension but Arda Turan is a slight doubt for Diego Simeone’s side.

Real Madrid

The big news for the weekend is that Cristiano Ronaldo only received a two-match ban for his kick and punch and therefore makes his return from suspension for this match.

Pepe and Luka Modrić are still unavailable to Carlo Ancelotti which means Raphaël Varane can continue in centre defence whilst Asier Illarramendi and Sami Khedira are in contention to replace the Croatian in midfield.

Predicted Lineups

Diego Simeone plays his 4-4-2 formation which looks to attack down the wings and put crosses into the box. Mario Mandžukić and Antoine Griezmann and should keep their places up front, but don’t be surprised if we see Fernando Torres at some point. Raúl García has also been a decent goalscoring threat as a substitute this season. Former Chelsea man Tiago has been excellent in breaking up the opposition possession in midfield.

Fábio Coentrão is the more-defensive of the two left-back options for Ancelotti. Sami Khedira adds a bit more steel and a more-defensive mind to the midfield. Isco ahead of James Rodríguez given the Spaniard’s form and the rest is as you were.

Key Matchups

Cristiano Ronaldo vs Juanfran
La Liga’s top scorer and 2014 FIFA Ballon d’Or winner was kept frustrated but for scoring a penalty in the first league meeting between these two this season. Cristiano Ronaldo is well-rested following his suspension and will no doubt be the key focus in this match. He has plenty of attacking options to supply if he doesn’t start shooting from any positions should the Atlético defence frustrate him once again. 28 goals in 18 La Liga matches suggests he’s more than capable of getting on the scoresheet this weekend though.

Koke vs Dani Carvajal
Atlético Madrid’s leader in assists has been playing down the left wing this season and is a good matchup for the home side. Real Madrid can often struggle defending down their flanks which could see Koke have another good game. The Atlético left winger has two target men and goalscorers to pick out in the middle too.

Gareth Bale vs Guilherme Siqueira
This is certainly a matchup Gareth Bale and Real Madrid will be looking to win. Guilherme Siqueira doesn’t get beat as often as Cristian Ansaldi but will have a tough game against the Welsh winger. Koke does offer protection down the left but look for Bale’s pace and cutting inside to cause this Atlético defence some real problems.

Prediction: Atlético Madrid 1-1 Real Madrid
Unbeaten in five matches this season versus Real Madrid, we think Atlético can remain unbeaten against their local rivals this season. Diego Simeone is certainly winning the tactical battles with his opposite number and has a midfield that can serve him well once again this weekend. They have two goalscorers up front and substitute Fernando Torres isn’t doing so bad since returning home. Real Madrid though have an abundance of talent, it’s just a case of whether they home side are able to minimise it again or not.
