The game this weekend was causing a certain amount of concern for Real Madrid and their fans. Despite it being a home game, the visit of an in-form Villareal and the absence of star man Cristiano Ronaldo made it look like it was going to be a tough one, but Garteh Bale was back from injury and the Welshman inspired his team mates to a vital victory which moves Real Madrid to the top of La Liga.

The Spanish authorities had stubbornly refused to see sense, so Ronaldo’s three match ban was upheld. Talented youg Jese Rodriguez started in the Portuguese star’s usual position on the left of Benzema, with Bale on the right and Di Maria enjoying a central role behind the front three.

Bale soon had Madrid off and running, taking advantage of some hesitant defending and producing a fine finish in the 7th minute. Not long afterwards, Bale produced a great ball in from the right which Benzema finished. And it was just as well the visitors had started slowly, because they really made a game of it once they got going.

A superb strike from Mario before halftime made it interesting and they gave Madrid some real problems in the second. Bale started to tire, but his teammate Jese restored the two goal lead with a cool finish to a through ball by Di Maria. But Villareal would not lie down and scored another beauty from a free-kick. As they pressed for a leveller though, Benzema struck again and put the game to bed.

Then Atletico slipped up and lost at Almeria, leaving Real Madrid sitting on top of the table on goal difference, with Barcelona facing a tough away game at Sevilla in order to go back above them. If Barca do win, it will put the top three teams all on 57 points and set up the closest finish in many years.
