Benzema and Di Maria secure Real Madrid futures after Arsenal transfer link

If the Real Madrid pair of Angel Di Maria and Karim Benzema were trying to convince the manager Carlo Ancelotti that they deserve to stay at the club and be important members of the team this season, then the performances they put in last night should have done the trick.

Di Maria was the best player on the pitch, always threatening and creating opportunities going forward for a generally poor and lacklustre Madrid side. The trip to Granada was fairly similar in it’s unconvincing nature as the opening game of La Liga against Betis last weekend. Cristiano Ronaldo was far from his best, putting three good free kick opportunities in a row straight into the Granada wall.

Benzema again scored the winning goal, early in the first half. Ronaldo’s poor control of a Di Maria cross fell to the French striker and he finished well, as good centre forward should. His second goal in two games should help his confidence and convince Ancelotti that he is vital to the Real Madrid system, Gareth Bale or not.

The team is playing as a unit yet, in fact they looked like they had at the start of last season under Jose Mourinho. The similarities did not end there, however, because Iker Casillas sat on the bench with a face like thunder. Ancelotti insists that he is selecting his keeper on form only, but it does seem strange that Casillas, who is widely regarded as one of the very best in the world, cannot get a game.
