Benzema form a concern for Madrid if Bale transfer fails

Real Madrid are having a very successful summer in the transfer market, so far at least. However, as Gonzalo Higuain is about to complete his 37 million euro transfer to the Serie A with Napoli and Rafa Benitez, there are some concerns at the club about the centre forward position.

Of course, there is always the goal machine that is Cristiano Ronaldo, although his best position is on the left of an attacking three. The reason Higuain was sold, as well as the fact he wanted to go, was because of his similarity to the French international striker Karim Benzema. For two seasons the players have had to share the striking duties and it has not really been good for either of them.

So this season is supposed to be much more reliant on Benzema, with the two young strikers Alvaro Morata and Jese Rodriguez getting the chance to burst onto the first team scene. However, so far in pre-season, Benzema is looking far from sharp. There may be a couple of reasons for this in that Benzema observes fasting for Ramadan, which is around halfway through. There is also the possibility that his ongoing criminal trial about soliciting an underage prostitute is weighing on his mind.

Madrid need him to get himself right quickly, though. The transfer of Gareth Bale from Tottenham, if it goes ahead, will offer the club another major goal threat, but if it does not happen, Madrid risk another poor start to the season if Benzema is not firing. Florentino Perez has always been a big supporter of the Frenchman, but he may have to consider signing another striker sooner rather than later. Hopefully, Benzema will do better in today’s friendly against PSG.
