Benzema on target to break his Real Madrid goals record

Posted on February 18, 2014 by admin

Ever since Karim Benzema moved to Real Madrid from Lyon in the summer of 2009, he has had to share the central striking duties with Gonzalo Higuain. Until this season, that is, when Carlo Ancelotti decided it had to be one or the other to get the best from them.

For a while in the early stages of the season, the manager seemed to have made a big mistake, as the French striker struggled for goals, form and confidence, but all three are flowing now. Maybe the court case was preying on his mind or he just needed to get used to being the main man, but he is certainly producing the goods now.

Benzema had his best ever season, in terms of goals, in his third year at the club, eclipsing his previous best of 31 at Lyon by one. With 18 goals already this time around, Benzema needs to get his skates on to get the 15 goals he needs to set a new personal record but the way he and the team are playing at the minute, with Champions League games and the Copa Del Rey final to come, it is definitely a realistic target. And a home game against lowly Elche at the weekend gives him a great opportunity to get closer to that target.
