Benzema to miss Real Madrid’s Champions League clash with Dortmund

Real Madrid have some injury worries for the crucial Champions League game against group leaders Borussia Dortmund. With the left backs Marcelo and Coentrao out, Mourinho will be glad to have his right back, Arbeloa, available but will play him at left back tonight. Sergio Ramos will play at right back, as he used to do for Sevilla, and 19-year old Varane will partner Pepe in the centre.

Dortmund have good attacking power, with Reus, Gotze and Lewandowski, so Mourinho will be keen to keep them on the defensive, but he will have to do it without the French international Karim Benzema. The striker has a hamstring problem, so the central striker role will fall to Gonzalo Higuain.

With Ronaldo and Di Maria on the flanks, and Mesut Ozil behind the front three, Madrid have plenty of flair and goal potential, but Mourinho may opt for the more defensive Michael Essien alongside Xabi Alonso, rather than the more creative Luka Modric.

With Real Madrid needing to win to regain top spot in the qualifying group, it is a big night at the Bernabeu for Mourinho and his players. The German champions will be under no illusions about the task facing them, but they could cause an upset if they get at Madrid’s makeshift defence.
