Captain Casillas considers exit from Real Madrid in January

Only a year ago, Iker Casillas was well on his way to becoming the Real Madrid player with the most games, as well as already winning more caps than any other for the Spain national team. His nearest rival for that honour is Xavi with around 20 less than Iker’s 151. His Madrid team mate Sergio Ramos is next, back on 110, but he is younger than Casillas. That shouldn’t matter to a goalkeeper, but if you lose your place in the team that is another matter.

So it is no wonder that Casillas is concerned, because he has lost his place with Real Madrid, and to another Spanish keeper Diego Lopez. Lopez is not even one of the three international keepers, so the situation is far from ideal for Casillas. Vicente Del Bosque has assured him that his place is safe, but Victor Valdes and Pepe Reina are knocking on the door, playing regularly for their clubs, and the World Cup in Brazil is just around the corner.

Casillas has said, “Clearly I’d like to play, but you have to respect the coach. They are his decisions. The selfish player always wants to play, but good professionals must accept it.

“I would like to stay at Real Madrid, because it’s what I dreamed of since childhood. What you have to do is train hard in order to play.

“I’m human, a footballer. I’ve not played for nine months and it (thoughts of leaving) happens to me. I’m not a machine. Of course I want to stay here, winning more titles with Real Madrid. I’ve been here since childhood, but one day also I may have to make a decision.

“I’ve decided that I want to be part of this team for a long time, but if the situation does not change within three months and I ask the same question, the best answer will be that I am thinking of leaving.”

It really is a strange situation, and it all came about after Casillas damaged his hand last season. His personal fall out with Mourinho did not help and many believed that is why he didn’t get back in the team when he recovered, but now the same is happening with Ancelotti, Casillas may feel he is doomed to sit on the bench, and he is too good a keeper for that.

Ancelotti has today declared that he wants Casillas to stay, and praised his influence as captain as well as keeper, but id he really wanted him to stay, he would surely play him more often than in the odd Champions League game. Since getting injured last season, Casillas has onlt added two games to his Real Madrid total, so he is still 85 games behind Raul in the club’s all-time list. What had seemed to be a certain record for the keeper is now looking extremely unlikely.
