Casillas asks questions with stunning saves to earn Real Madrid a point

For long periods of the game in Turin last night, Real Madrid were outplayed by the Italian champions Juventus. The first half especially was a case of holding on under concerted pressure from the home team. Iker Casillas had already kept Madrid level before a rash challenge in the box by Rafael Varane gave Vidal the chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot, and he did so just before the break.

What has been keeping Madrid winning games recently, despite the well documented defensive problems, is the abundance of creative and attacking threat, and the two most expensive players in the world turned the game on it’s head after the break. So with half an hour to go, Madrid had an unlikely lead, but Juve came back strongly, scoring a quick equaliser and pushing hard for the winner, but the 32-year old keeper was in fantastic form and made some unbelievable stops to earn his team a barely deserved draw.

The Italian club’s manager Antonio Conte and Casillas’ opposite number Buffon heaped praise on the Madrid captain, and it is sure to raise the issue of him sitting on the bench for La Liga games. On form, Casillas looks in great shape and he has that extra something special. Diego Lopez has done well and has not made any mistakes, but is he better than Casillas? And if not, then why does he always play ahead of him?
