Casillas returns for Real Madrid at Galatasaray

The Real Madrid club captain and keeper, Iker Casillas, is set to start his first competitive game for the club since he broke his finger in a La Liga game against Valencia on 23rd January. Jose Mourinho then signed Diego Lopez from Sevilla, but Casillas did not get his place back when he recovered and it was clear that the player and manager had serious issues with each other.

It was a surprise, however, when Ancelotti continued to select Lopez this season, and there has been lots of speculation as to why. The thing is, Lopez has been p[laying well, including a Man of the Match performance to rescue a draw at Villareal on Saturday.

The new manager has suggested that he might rotate between the two, although many football experts doubt if this can work, and tonight will be the first test of this plan. Maybe it is because tonight’s game is in a hostile foreigh stadium, with the fans in Istanbul having a fearsome reputation. It could be a night where a cool head and European experience are invaluable, and Casillas has a clear advantage there.

With just one international appearance as substitute and less than 50 European games, most of those in the Europa League, Lopez is way behind Casillas’ phenomenal record of 150 internationals and 129 European games. Starting a game for Madrid will be a huge relief to Casillas and might start to dispel the rumours suggesting that Casillas might leave.
