The Spanish cup final tonight is the last chance for Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho to finish the season in a positive way and they are favourites to do so. Tonight’s opponents and fierce city rivals Atletico Madrid are determined to spoil that, however, and their Argentinean coach Diego Simeone has got his players believing.

The question for Jose Mourinho to answer is whether he really wants to leave Real Madrid having just won the Copa Del Rey, or is it more important to him to assert his authority. We will know on Friday when Real Madrid and their city rivals Atletico run out onto the Bernabeu pitch for the Spanish cup final.

Mourinho publicly slammed his Portuguese central defender Pepe after Pepe said that Iker Casillas deserved more respect than he was getting. Mourinho replied by saying that Pepe was only upset because he had lost his place to the 20-year old French defender Rafael Varane.  ......Read more...

Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid need all the help they can get ahead of tomorrow’s massive game at the Bernabeu tomorrow. Trailing Borussia Dortmund 4-1 from the first leg, the club has been sweating over the fitness of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese star scored the only goal for Madrid in the first leg, but also picked up a thigh problem and had to miss the game against Real Betis on Saturday.

The good news for Madrid is that Ronaldo went through a normal training session with his team mates today and there was no sign of any problems. The Spanish champions have a mountain to climb against last year’s German champions, but the away goal gives hope.  ......Read more...

Real Madrid face the biggest game of the season so far tomorrow, and it seems as if Jose Mourinho will have fewer players to choose from than he would like. Luka Modric, who was the star of the show as Madrid came from behind to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford, is a real doubt. Jose Mourinho and his Real Madrid players are not expecting any miracles in La Liga. With 15 league games left, Barcelona are 16 points ahead and so Madrid have given up on retaining the title. All of their effort will now be concentrated on the Champions league and the Copa Del Rey.

With the visit of Manchester United to the Bernabeu on Wednesday firmly in mind, Mourinho has not included Xabi Alonso, Varane, Marcelo and Di Maria in the squad. These players are not really injured but have small niggles that Mourinho does not want to risk aggravating.  ......Read more...

Jose Mourinho got some great news this week, when it was revealed that his keeper, the Spanish international Iker Casillas, has had the plaster removed from his hand and is looking good to be back a lot sooner than was predicted. The 30-year old keeper broke his finger in a cup game against Valencia two weeks ago and was operated on the next day. I don’t think it is an exaggeration to say that Jose Mourinho has had an absolute nightmare with injuries for Real Madrid this season. Since it began last summer, Mourinho has hardly ever been able to select from a full squad and this can be seen in the gap to Barcelona in the Primera Liga. This also means that the Copa Del Rey and the Champions league have taken on an even greater significance than usual for Los Blancos and the special one, because a season without trophies is unacceptable at a club like Real Madrid.  ......Read more...

Real Madrid now know the extent of the injury to Iker Casillas, and Jose Mourinho is now considering a move in the January transfer window in order to save the season from total disaster. Casillas needs an operation and is unlikely to be available to play for at least two months, according to medical experts.

In two months time, Madrid could be out of the Champions league and the Copa Del Rey, because we have tough double headers in both competitions coming up. Barcelona beat Malaga last night to book their place in the semi-final against Madrid. Real Madrid are reaching an absolutely crucial period of the season. Jose Mourinho has stated publicly that he has given up on the Primera Liga title, and few would disagree, with Barcelona 15 points ahead. So Mourinho and Real Madrid are concentrating on the Spanish cup and the Champions league to save the season from disaster.

The absence of the Madrid captain and goalkeeper, Iker Casillas, could not come at a worse time. The first leg of the Copa Del Rey semi-final is next week, against either Barcelona or Malaga. The Spanish champions also host Manchester United for the first leg of the Champions league tie on February 13th. It is only the first leg in the quarter-finals of the Copa Del Rey, but Valencia are a tough opponent at any time, and have already held the Spanish champions to a draw at home in the league this season.
