Could Real Madrid lose Casillas to Arsenal, Chelsea or Man Utd

Posted on August 21, 2013 by admin

There are reports in the English media that three Premier League clubs are hoping to sign the Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas. Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United are all thinking about trying to sign the 32-year old Spanish international. Normally this would be of absolutely no concern to Madrid fans, because Casillas is the club captain and has never shown any wish to play for any other club.

The reason the three Premier League clubs are even thinking about bidding, however, is because of the rumours that Casillas is disillusioned with his role at the Santiago Bernabeu. He thought his time on the bench had come to an end when Jose Mourinho left the club at the end of last season, but he was shocked to find himself back on the bench for Sunday’s La Liga opener against Real Betis.

The Spanish media was full of pictures of Casillas sitting on the bench and his face was like thunder. Casillas is Madrid through and through, but he is also not a player who will be content to be second choice, especially with the World Cup coming up in Brazil next year. Carlo Ancelotti has spoken about the possibility of rotating between Casillas and Diego Lopez, but even that may not be enough to keep him happy.

The Arsenal keeper Szczesny is young and prone to the odd mistake, while the new boss at United is apparently unconvinced by David De Gea, while Chelsea just like spending money. All three clubs could offer Casillas top flight football in the Premier and Champions Leagues. Both Arsenal and United would also guarantee Casillas a regular starting place, so Ancelotti needs to convince Casillas that he is the number one or risk losing him. This problem was all caused by Mourinho, so the spectre of his time at the club is still hanging over us.
