Have Real Madrid messed up with Ozil?

Both of the biggest transfer stories of yesterday involved Real Madrid. In the morning it was all about the presentation of the second most expensive signing in the world, Gareth Bale, to the Madrid fans at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, but then it all turned to Mesut Ozil.

Even at the presentation, when news was slipping out about the Germany international’s possible move to Arsenal, some Madrid fans were chanting at Florentino Perez not to sell Ozil. The president put his fingers to his lips, and obviously took no notice, because Arsenal did finally announce the transfer before the window closed. Many fans of Madrid have been critical of the decision, which appears to have been taken by the new manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Ozil said, “In recent day’s I realised that I could not rely on the coaches trust.”

When Ozil was substituted the other day, he was clearly unhappy. The rumour is that Ancelotti was asked to choose which player out of Ozil and Di Maria would be sold, and he picked the German. The reason why fans are so unhappy is that Ozil was the man responsible for more goal assists than any other, by some distance.

If Bale takes some time to settle and get used to La Liga, as many think he will, Ancelotti might come under serious pressure for allowing such a creative and influential player as Ozil to leave the club. If Bale settles quickly, however, and starts to repeat his knack of scoring vital goals and winning matches, this will all blow over very soon.
