Heynckes now favourite to land Real Madrid job

Posted on May 31, 2013 by admin

The position of manager at Real Madrid is one of the biggest jobs in the world of football. Jose Mourinho is one of the few coaches to be given three years in charge at the Bernabeu, in recent history anyway. In the last 30 years, only Vicente Del Bosque and Leo Beenhakker have also had three seasons. The usual time span for a Madrid coach is a single season.

One man who knows that better than most is the outgoing Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes. He was given the job back in 1997 and is remembered fondly by the club’s support, mainly because he brought the European cup back to the Spanish capital after a gap of over 30 years. The team struggled in La Liga, though, and he was replaced the following summer.

One of the main targets for the new Real Madrid manager will be to bring Champions League glory again. It is the main reason that Mourinho was brought to the club, but he failed and it has now been 11 years since Madrid were champions of Europe. The fact that the next cup will be the 10th, gives it an extra special attraction, and the man who led his team to glory this month has now been installed as the favourite to replace Mourinho.

The probability of a short tenure will not worry Heynckes, as he is 68-years old and is not looking for a long term project. PSG are not making it easy for us to get Carlo Ancelotti, but he will be a free agent next summer, so Heynckes may be the ideal candidate for a season. He has already worked at the club and he knows what it takes to win the Champions League. Plus, if he can bring the historic 10th back to the Bernabeu, he will write his name large in Real Madrid legend.
