Real Madrid chased Luka Modric from Tottenham for a long time before finally getting their man this summer. He was not cheap, costing around £33 million, but was expected to be an instant success and help Madrid to retain the Spanish league title. Well it hasn’t worked out so far, but his team mate, Xabi Alonso, has backed him to come good as long as he is given a little more time to settle in at the club.
“I don’t think it’s pressure. He plays in a position where we have several players and he’s adapting to a new club and a new league. It took me a while to adapt on my return to La Liga.
“But he’s integrated very well. He’s a fantastic guy and a great player. I’ve no doubt that he’s going to be an important player.”
To be fair to the Croatian international, he has had to come in to a Madrid side that is not playing well. There are obviously tensions in the dressing room and we have been struggling for form and consistency since the season began. Jose Mourinho cannot seem to make up his mind who to play from one game to the next, and the injuries in defence have meant that Madrid have needed more defensively minded players in front of the back four.
Modric certainly has the talent to succeed at the Bernabeu, I just hope that the fans do not lose patience with him during his period of adjustment.
