More Pressure on Mourinho after Real Madrid lose again! plus video

Despite playing a strong side, Jose Mourinho had to watch his Real Madrid team play second fiddle to a skilful and hard working Celta Vigo in the Spanish version of the FA cup, the Copa Del Rey, last night. As the rain fell in Vigo, so did the spirits of the Madrid players and fans. It could have been much worse for them, but a late goal from Ronaldo and the prospect of a second leg at the Bernabeu averted complete disaster.

Ronaldo was perhaps lucky to be on the pitch to score that goal. The Portuguese striker had picked up an early yellow for a late tackle, and had slid in to Hugo Mallo from behind in the build up to Bermejo scoring the first goal for Celta. The referee noticed the foul but played advantage, and the goal may just have saved Ronaldo from a second yellow.

Di Maria and Benzema were anonymous, and the French striker went off with an injury, replaced by Callejon, having hardly touched the ball. Di Maria was removed at the break in favour of Ozil, but it was not until Bustos had put the hosts two up in the 78th minute that Madrid showed any urgency. A great ball from Alonso found Ronaldo just onside and the man does not miss those.

Mourinho admitted that the result was fair and said he was disappointed in a lot of his players. The only one he praised was the young French defender Varane. He played with energy and control, and had to finish the game injured because the coach had used all three subs.

This is the sixth loss so far this season for Mourinho, one more than he had all last season. The Madrid fans are not happy, but at least there is the second leg at the Bernabeu to go through to the next round.
