Mourinho and Ronaldo focus on Real Madrid vs. Manchester United

Everyone but the most optimistic Real Madrid fan must have given up on the Primera Liga title this season. With another disappointing draw against bottom club Osasuna on Saturday and another Barcelona victory yesterday, the gap to the top of the table is now 18 points. It is not going to happen. We are seven points behind our city rivals Athletico and that may prove difficult, but the season can still be successful.

One of the main reasons that Jose Mourinho was brought to the club was for his success in the champions league. This summer it will be 11 years since Madrid lifted the most coveted trophy in club football, which is too long. We are still the most successful club in the history of the competition, but the 10th cup has proved elusive so far.

Manchester United come to the Bernabeu on February 13th for the first leg, and Mourinho has already started planning for the game. He was at Old Trafford yesterday to see United narrowly beat Liverpool in the Premier league, and he will have been encouraged by what he saw. They have scored plenty of goals, especially their new striker Robin van Persie, but they are fragile in defence.

With the attacking players available to Mourinho, Madrid should be able to gain a significant first leg lead to take back to England, and Ronaldo is well aware of how important success in Europe is to Madrid this season.

“I’ve been here for three and a half years now and I think that’s the case because everyone involved is totally focused on winning the club’s 10th European cup.”
