Mourinho must do without Alonso for Real Madrid vs. Real Zaragoza

The 30-year old midfield general, Xabi Alonso, played his 100th competitive game for Real Madrid in September and he has become one of the most reliable players at the club, if not the world. He also played his 100th game for the Spanish national side during Euro 2012. He marked that event with both goals as Spain beat France in the quarter finals, on their way to lifting the trophy again.

Jose Mourinho will have to shuffle his playing pack tomorrow, however, as Alonso is suspended for the game due to collecting his fifth yellow card in this La Liga season. Alonso has always been combative but does not normally get booked quite so often.

With yellow cards in both Supercopa matches against Barcelona, and one in the Champions league against Borussia Dortmund, Alonso has been booked eight times in just 14 games. This probably reflects the relatively poor start to the season that Real Madrid have made.

Alonso is an amiable character and plays with style, but when his coach needs some steel from his players, then Alonso will not waver. With Arbeloa back in training, Michael Essien may be able to replace Alonso in front of the defence. Mourinho does have plenty of midfield options, with Kaka, Modric, Ozil and Khedira, so hopefully, Madrid will not miss the Spaniard too much.
