Real Madrid 4 CSKA 1

The scoreline would suggest an easy assured victory in the Bernabeu last night, but it was not like that. Before Higuain`s opening goal, Doumbia had a good goal disallowed and failed to capitalise on a out of character mistake by Casillas.

Madrid`s second goal, scored by Ronaldo in the 55th minute, was a long range strike which should easily have been saved. Chepchugov, the russian keeper, misjudged the ball and it was 2-0. He could also have prevented Benzema scoring the third in the 70th minute but it was not his night. Benzema had only been on the field for 30 seconds after replacing Higuain.

There was some concern when CSKA pulled a goal back on 76 minutes but Madrid held firm and Ronaldo scored the fourth in injury time to complete a night of misery for the muscovites.

The ground was not full, and the home crowd were less than enthused by what they saw. Boos were noticeable when CSKA scored but there was a section of ultras who gave the team their support at that moment, prompting Mourinho to go and applaud them at the final whistle and thank them in his post-match interview.

Xabi Alonso will miss the first leg of the next round after picking up a yellow card. Kaka and Ozil were the star performers, with Mourinho saying of Kaka, “he`s had a spectacular match. the majority of the play came through him, and Ozil so I`m happy. He works hard for the team and is always exhausted by the end of the game.”

So, not the best performance but a good win and the mighty whites go into the quarter finals fearing nobody, with an unstoppable strike trio and a talented and strong squad behind them. Now who`s next ?
