Real Madrid begin title defense with Higuain

Jose Mourinho has given the first chance to lead the line for Real Madrid to Gonzalo Higuain. The 24-year old Argentinean international striker has impressed Mourinho in training with his work, dedication and attitude. 24-year old French international Karim Benzema will start on the bench against Valencia today.

Higuain has been training since the first available day, July 15th. He is, therefore, further along in his preparations. Benzema came back later because he was with France at Euro 2012. There were a lot of rumours at the end of last season that Higuain was going to move on this summer, but he convinced his manager that he was determined and ready to fight for his place at the Bernabeu.

The two strikers had very similar scoring records last season and Mourinho must be delighted to have two such talented forwards pushing each other for the place. Higuain will sit just in front of the awesome creative trident of Ronaldo, Ozil and Di Maria.

Lass Diarra has got the call to occupy defensive midfield alongside Xabi Alons, when many would have expected the German Khedira to play. Maybe Mourinho wants to give Lass another chance to prove himself, or maybe Khedira has not quite recovered his fitness after returning from Euro 2012.

The back four is at full strength with Arbeloa, Pepe, Ramos and Coentrao so I expect Valenci to have a very hard day. Mourinho and Ronaldo will be keen to get off to a good start if they are to have a chance of breaking the amazing records of last season.
