Real Madrid boss furious over `clear` penalty not given in Clasico [with highlights]

Carlo Ancelotti was fuming after Real Madrid lost the first El Clasico contest of the season. The game last night at the Nou Camp was the first for quite a few players, as well as the Italian coach and his Barcelona counterpart Tata Martino, and all of them will now know just how intense they can be.

Although Madrid lost the game 2-1, with Jese’s late strike coming too late after goals by Neymar and Alexis, it could have been much different and Madrid can take many positives from the game. After Neymar’s early strike, Los Blancos had the best of the game and created plenty of chances.

Karim Benzema nearly scored a stunning goal, but had to watch in despair as the ball crashed back down off the bar. Valdes was beaten then, but he had to produce a number of good saves to keep Barcelona ahead. There was a shout for a penalty when Khedira nearly scored, but Adriano’s handball was accidental and it would have been harsh.

The main incident, and the one that had Ancelotti fuming about the referee, was Mascherano’s challenge on Ronaldo in the box. The ref saw it as a coming together or a shoulder charge, but replays clearly show the Barca defender using his arm on the back of the Madrid striker.

Ancelotti said, “Naturally the penalty was very clear for me. I think everyone saw it. The only person who didn’t was the referee.”

That incident was at 1-0 and would clearly have changed the game. Ronaldo was so angry he could not stop complaining to the referee and was eventually booked. The defeat leaves Madrid six points behind Barcelona, but it should also give the players the belief that this season’s La Liga title is certainly winnable.
