Real Madrid close in on Falcao transfer

Posted on December 11, 2012 by admin

It is unusual for Real Madrid to sign a player directly from their city rivals, Athletico Madrid, but media reports suggest that it is going to happen with the superstar Colombian striker Radamel Falcao. Athletico have managed to hold on to their player so far, but they expect to come under renewed pressure when the transfer window opens again in January.

Premier league clubs Chelsea and Manchester City were thought to be front runners for the 26-year old hitman, but Real Madrid are planning to step in with a £45 million offer. Relations between the clubs’ staff is pretty good since Jose Mourinho took over, and there is a feeling in Spain that the deal could be done.

The Athletico fans will not be happy, but the club has been preparing them to lose the striker, and they know the financial problems affecting the team. Falcao is believed to be keen on playing at the Bernabeu, which his father let slip in the summer.

If Real could persuade Athletico to sell in January, rather than wait until the end of the season, Falcao would give a massive boost to Mourinho in his attempt to win the Champions league. Madrid hoping for a record 10th trophy, while Mourinho will become the first coach to win with three different clubs. As Athletico are in the Europa league this season, Falcao would be eligible to appear for Real.

The president of Real was at a gala dinner alongside Falcao yesterday, and joked about passing messages to the striker with napkins. Perhaps it was not a joke after all.
