Real Madrid complete 4th signing of summer with Illarramendi

Posted on July 12, 2013 by admin

Florentino Perez, the president of Real Madrid, has got his man again. After surprising the football world by getting Isco to change his mind and choose Madrid over Manuel Pellegrini and Manchester City, with a little help from Zinedine Zidane, Perez has broken down the stubborn resistance of Real Sociedad and the president Jokim Aperribay and sealed the deal for the defensive midfield star Asier Illarramendi.

The exact details of the agreement have not been revealed, but it is clear that Madrid will pay the full amount of the 23-year old Spanish international’s release clause. That amounts to 38 million euros including the Spanish version of VAT, and he will be given a five year contract at the Bernabeu.

Illarramendi is seen as the successor to Xabi Alonso, and is obviously key to the plans of Carlo Ancelotti. He played and excelled in every game for Sociedad last season, but he may have to be content with a supporting role at Madrid for large parts of this season, as he learns his way around the team and settles into the Madrid style.

Alonso has been successfully operated on this summer, however, and will miss the start of the season. If Illarramendi starts well, Alonso may find it more difficult than expected to take up his old position again, and that could make the 31-year old seriously consider his future, especially as there is interest from Chelsea and Liverpool in the Premier League.
