Jose Mourinho is well aware that he is on dangerous ground with the fans and officials at Real Madrid. A victory tonight at the Bernabeu against Celta Vigo will be a big step towards mending the situation, and the Portuguese manager is confident that his team will not let him down.
Madrid suffered a 2-1 defeat in the away leg, but the hard fought victory with 10 men at the weekend has brought the players together, and they are ready to push on for the rest of the season. Iker Casillas will regain his place in the starting line up, although that does not mean that he has made friends with his manager.
Mourinho will feel that he has made his point and will now focus on winning games for Real Madrid. He also expects the fans to be right behind the team and forget any animosity they may feel towards him or the way the team has performed this season.
“Celta play well, are confident, are leading 2-1, but my experience in these two and a half years is that the fans like the cup, the excitement of winning and going through. And I have a feeling that, even though we are playing again inside three days, if we play with the same effort, the team and the fans will be ready and we can go through.”
Mourinho will not admit it, but he must have given up on the Primera Liga title this season. Barcelona are 16 points ahead and will not drop that many points for the rest of the season. Mourinho will focus his attention on winning the Copa Del Rey and the champions league, which would still be a great achievement.
