Real Madrid could really suffer for Ronaldo red card

Posted on February 03, 2014 by admin

I am sure that Real Madrid will be appealing whatever suspension is handed out to Cristiano Ronaldo for his red card yesterday during the frustrating 1-1 draw away to Athletic Bilbao. The punishment of losing the best player in the world was bad enough, ultimately meaning that Madrid missed a great chance to go above great rivals Barcelona in La Liga.

But if Ronaldo is now banned for three games, which he could well be because it was a straight red, it will mean he misses both legs of the Copa Del Rey semi-final against city rivals and new league leaders Atletico Madrid. There is also a tricky looking La Liuga game against 5th placed Villareal to consider.

So I am sure that Madrid will appeal the card, but have my doubts as to whether it will do any good. The problem is that, although the Bilbao captain Carlos Gurpegi milked the situation and feigned injury, video evidence will still show that the Portuguese star did raise his hands and make contact with Gurpegi’s face.

You would hope that common sense comes into the decision, but we have seen many times before that this is rarely the case. The importance of Ronaldo to Real Madrid was highlighted again before he was sent off, providing the pace and skill to set up Jese to score the opener in a really tough game at the San Mames.

The next three games could be huge in Real Madrid’s season and it will be a real problem if Ronaldo is unavailable.
