Jose Mourinho already has one of his former players from Chelsea in the Real Madrid squad, and could soon add the left back Ashley Cole, according to reports. Mourinho has a good relationship with the players who enjoyed great success with during his time in London.
Michael Essien was brought into the squad in the summer, despite not having played alot for Chelsea, but Mourinho knows the Ghanaian and trusts his talents. This was proved on Saturday when he picked Essien at left back against Celta de Vigo. Essien is not a left back, and Mourinho had called Nacho into the squad from the reserves but gave the starting place to the former Chelsea man. This means that Essien is also likely to start against Dortmund on Wednesday.
There is a feeling that Mourinho is reluctant to give the up and coming Real Madrid players a fair chance, but he insists that he does what is best for the team. All of the games are crucial and so he must do what it takes to win.
Cole is set to leave Chelsea for nothing in the summer after the club decided to offer him just a one year contract. Manchester United and PSG are keen to snap up the England international, according to the Daily Mirror, but Mourinho may pre-empt that by offering Chelsea some money for him in January.
Marcelo is due to be back in training around the same time and so Madrid would have three quality left backs fighting for a place, surely one too many. Mourinho thinks alot of Cole, however, so if I was Coentrao, I would be concerned.
