Real Madrid favourites to pass Schalke and keep treble hopes alive

After a shaky start to the season, Real Madrid are hitting top gear and looking very good. Carlo Ancelotti seems to have got a great atmosphere going in the dressing room and, after a fair bit of tinkering with team selection and formation, the Italian seems to have settled into a more regular system for Madrid.

It is paying off handsomely, with a place in the Copa Del Rey final already assured. The weekend then saw Barcelona and Atletico fail to keep up with Real and means Los Blancos have taken a three point lead at the top of La Liga. Of course, a domestic double would be fantastic and would eclipse any of the seasons under Jose Mourinho, but what everyone at the club really wants is another Champions League triumph.

Ancelotti advised caution ahead of tonight’s trip to face Schalke and praised the achievement of his predecessor in getting to the semi-final stage three years running. Although Madrid are favourites, they have a very poor record away to German sides and Schalke, despite a slip-up in the Bundesliga at the weekend, are formidable opponents.

But, as Sky Sports reports, Ronaldo is back from suspension and is absolutely determined to inspire Real Madrid to that long awaited 10th European cup. He also has the personal goal of scoring to overtake Ibrahimovich as the competition’s top scorer. Don’t bet against it.
