Real Madrid gifted vital win at Elche with dubious penalty

While arguments rage across the Spanish football world, Carlo Ancelotti and his Real Madrid players are just relieved that they came away from this tough night in Alicante with all three points. To be honest, they didn’t really deserve it, and Elche will quite rightly feel aggrieved that they did not record a famous result against the giants of La Liga.

Diego Lopez was once again much busier than he would have liked in the Madrid goal, but it was the away side who took the lead, with a Cristiano Ronaldo free kick at the start of the second half. But Madrid did not make the most of their advantage and press on, and they were punished.

Just as the game went into extra time, Boakye headed Elche level and that seemed to be that, but then the controversy occurred. We were going into the fifth minute of stoppage time when there was only supposed to be three, Madrid took a corner and Pepe tangled with Carlos Sanchez and much to the relief of Ancelotti and his players, the ref pointed to the spot. Ronaldo converted of course and Madrid claimed a vital three points, but replays show that Pepe was more to blame than Sanchez.

Because the referee also booked an Elche player for diving, when it looked like Khedira had just clipped him, and waving away claims for a second yellow card for Ramos, the Catalan press is up in arms, but I think Pepe was merely clever and fooled him. The same referee has already disallowed a good goal scored against Barcelona at the Nou Camp, so he is not biased, just not very good.

Madrid now need to make the most of their luck by playing much better on Saturday and beating Atletico in the Madrid derby to leapfrog them in the table.
