Real Madrid have no worries after Champions League draw with Schalke

Posted on December 16, 2013 by admin

There is not really any such thing as an easy game in the last 16 of the Champions League, but Real Madrid players, fans and manager will be quite pleased to have drawn the German Bundesliga club Schalke for the knockout games due to be played in February.

It could have been a lot worse and it could have been a little better. Zenit St. Petersburg or Olympiakos would probably have been the choice, but Madrid did very well to avoid Arsenal, Man City or AC Milan. Even better news is that Barcelona were drawn with Man City and Bayern were drawn with Arsenal, so two very strong sides will be going out.

Schalke are not a bad side at all, but are not having the best of seasons in the German Bundesliga. And they only scraped into the next phase of the Champions League on the last day, behind group winners Chelsea. They were pasted home and away by Jose Mourinho’s team and could only draw against a very poor Steaua Beucharest. And despite winning at the weekend, they are languishing in 6th place, 17 points off leaders Bayern Munich.

They do have one of the most exciting young players around in Julian Draxler, but on the whole, Real Madrid can happily expect to get through comfortably to the quarter-finals, as we chase that famous 10th European cup.
