Real Madrid have transfer agreement with Dortmund star Gundogan

Real Madrid are poised to dash the hopes of some of the Premier League big boys, including Manchester United and Arsenal. Those two English clubs were thought to be the main contenders to complete the signing of the Germany international Ilkay Gundogan from Borussia Dortmund, but it looks like they are going to miss out.

According to The Express, the 22-year old is heading to the Bernabeu, as Real Madrid have prepared an offer of around £25 million. The report also claims that there is already an agreement in principle for the transfer. Gundogan has apparently turned down the offer of a new contract from his Bundesliga club to extend his stay past the current deal which runs out in 2015.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is hoping to persuade Dortmund to do the deal, and he might even use Nuri Sahin, who is currently on loan in Germany from Madrid, as part of the negotiations. Sahin was signed from Dortmund and his career in La Liga never really took off, but he seems happy back at his former club and could just seal the deal.

Gundogan could be seen as the long term replacement for Xabi Alonso, who plays the same sort of deep lying playmaker role, but it might also raise questions over the future of Sami Khedira who has been linked with a possible move to join Ozil at Arsenal.
