Real Madrid having to battle for transfer of Illarramendi

Real Madrid were hoping to announce another landmark signing this week, with a verbal agreement apparently in place with Asier Illarramendi and his club Real Sociedad. Whether or not that verbal agreement was reached or not, it was not worth the paper it was not written on, and Real Madrid may have to meet the full release clause of the contract if they are going to add the 23-year old midfielder to the squad.

According to El Confidencial, the president of Real Sociedad Jokin Apperibay has insisted that he wants to keep the young defensive midfielder at the club as they prepare for their first attempt at the Champions League. The only way he will be sold, insists Aperribay, is if a club triggers the release clause of around 30 million euros.

A report in AS claims that the two clubs had come to an arrangement in which the transfer fee was to be paid in two instalments, but Sociedad have changed their minds, partly because of the need to have the funds available to replace him, and partly because the club’s fans are unhappy about making any accommodations that help Madrid to sign their star player.

It seems to me that Aperribay knows that Madrid are already thinking that they will have Illarramendi in the side for the start of pre-season training on Monday and believes that he can squeeze the transfer a bit to his advantage. He could well be right.
