What a difference a week makes eh? Zinedine Zidane and Real Madrid were absolutely flying along this time last week, having just put Espanyol to the sword to equal the La Liga record of straight wins set by fierce rivals Barcelona and continue the 100 percent start to the new domestic league campaign.
The fact that Barca had suffered that shock defeat at home to newly promoted Alaves and seen Lionel Messi ruled out with injury, while Atletico Madrid have yet to find their best form, made the future look very bright for Los Blancos. But things do not look so rosy today.
Two disappointing draws with Villarreal on Wednesday and Las Palmas yesterday have halted our momentum and allowed Barca to close to within a single point. It could even have been worse as they were held to a draw themselves in midweek by Atletico although they really should have won.
The problems facing Zidane are not helped by his decision to replace Ronaldo before the late equaliser yesterday and the Portugal international was clearly not happy. Real Madrid have a big week ahead, with the trip to face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League and the visit of Eibar in La Liga on Sunday, so Zidane needs to get the team to bounce back straight away.
If he doesn’t we could be in big trouble in Europe and in Spain.
