Jose Mourinho has a serious problem to deal with after both of his left backs for Real Madrid picked up injuries during their international games. Three other players have picked up knocks but it is the left side of defence that is going to be a problem for up to three months.
Marcelo played for Brazil in their friendly against Iraq and was training for the game against Japan yesterday when he broke the fifth metatarsal in his right foot. Doctors predict that he will miss around three months with his recovery. That will take us up to the January transfer window but there is no chance of replacing him before then.
Fabio Coentrao had already been ruled out for at least a month with a muscle problem picked up in Portugal’s match against Russia. Mourinho faces two crucial games in the champion’s league against a very good Borussia Dortmund side with no proper left back.
Khedira of Germany, Higuain of Argentina and Sergio Ramos of Spain have all picked up knocks but they should all soon recover. Real need them back as they cannot afford to fall any further behind Barcelona in La Liga.
If Madrid can get through the next three league games against Celta Vigo, Mallorca and Zaragoza they should have Coentrao back in time for the hard game against Athletico Madrid on November 18th. We do not want to face Falcao without a good defence.
