Real Madrid may enter transfer market for keeper after Casillas injury

Real Madrid now know the extent of the injury to Iker Casillas, and Jose Mourinho is now considering a move in the January transfer window in order to save the season from total disaster. Casillas needs an operation and is unlikely to be available to play for at least two months, according to medical experts.

In two months time, Madrid could be out of the Champions league and the Copa Del Rey, because we have tough double headers in both competitions coming up. Barcelona beat Malaga last night to book their place in the semi-final against Madrid. The first leg will be at home in the Bernabeu next Wednesday, and the second will be at the end of February.

In two weeks, Manchester United come to the Bernabeu for the first leg of the Champions league knockout stage. There is also the small matter of the league visit of Barcelona on March 2nd. Three days after that Madrid travel to England for the away leg against United. This is a tough run of games at the best of times, but will be evn harder when you have lost the best keeper in the world.

Many therefore expect Mourinho to sign a new keeper, whether on loan or permanently, and teams across Europe are bracing themselves for offers. The Brazilian keeper Julio Cesar of QPR is high on the list, as are Fernandez of Osasuna and Roberto of Zaragoza.

The number two, Adan, will be hoping for a chance, and may have got it if the games were not so important. If Madrid go out of these two cups, the season is practically over, because the gap in the league to Barcelona is just too big to recover.
