Real Madrid must forget Clasico and focus on positives

There is a lot of disappointment and anger among Real Madrid fans, and I am sure that Carlo Ancelotti and his players took the defeat hard, but there is no reason to dwell on it or keep going on about the refereeing decisions. To be honest, there are plenty of reasons to be positive and look forward, while thinking about the Clasico game could be an unwelcome distraction.

Okay we lost, but it was such a close game and could easily have gone the other way. It only puts Madrid six points behind Barcelona in La Liga, and there are 28 games left to play, including the Clasico at the Bernabeu in March. Starting with the home game against Sevilla this Wednesday, Madrid just need to focus on winning games and continuing to build understanding and form.

A lot of pundits have picked up on the performance of Gareth Bale and been critical of the Welshman, but don’t forget he is still not fully fit and has hardly played with his new team mates, as well as being played in an unfamiliar position in an experimental line-up. For me, he showed enough drive, strength and technical ability to suggest he will soon settle in and start producing the sort of performances that gave him a clean sweep of the individual awards in the Premier League last season.

Illarramendi and Bernzema both looked hungry and sharp when they came on, and those two could be big players for Madrid for the rest of the season. If Benzema can rediscover his form, it will make Madrid extremely dangerous, because we have been making lots of chances but failing to kill teams off. Varane is back and Alonso is almost ready to return from injury. It is way too early to write off Real Madrid…
