Real Madrid must not lose to Man City and hope Dortmund fail

If Real Madrid can avoid defeat against Manchester City at the Etihad stadium tonight, the English champions will have crashed out at the group stages for the second year running and Jose Mourinho will be on the verge of progressing to the next round. That is the easy bit, the complicated part comes in the other game and the possible permutations in the Group of Death.

Theoretically, any team can still qualify, but Roberto Mancini’s men need a miracle. If they win both of their games, they will have eight points, but Borussia Dortmund are already on eight, while Madrid currently have seven. Ajax come to the Bernabeu on the last day, while City travel to Dortmund. Of course, Mourinho wants to finish top of the group and to do that Madrid have to overhaul Dortmund. As the Germans have a better head to head record, we need to get two more points than them in the next two games, so we need Ajax to do us a favour tonight.

If City have something to play for going into the last day, they could certainly upset the German champions. Mourinho will have looked at all the possible twists and turns, but he will want his players to focus on just one thing, getting a result tonight. If City win tonight, then Madrid may have to beat Ajax in the last game, because a draw would potentially leave us on the same points as City. Having beat them 3-2 in the Bernabeu, a 1-0 or 2-1 loss would give us the disadvantage if we finish equal on points, so Madrid need to finish their chances tonight.

With Benzema back leading the line and Ronaldo hungry for goals in his bid to regain the Ballon D’Or from Messi, Madrid should have plenty of firepower. Coentrao is back so Mourinho has four fit defenders playing in their normal positions. Khedira is fit and will add steel to the Madrid midfield which could be important tonight.
