Real Madrid ready for Atletico backlash in Copa Del Rey

Posted on February 11, 2014 by admin

Real Madrid are in a great position in the Copa Del Rey. They are 3-0 up from the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu and that would usually be enough to think that a place in the final was just a formality, but that is not the case tonight.

Because the opponents are Atletico Madrid and Ancelotti and his players are expecting a tough night. Not only are Atletico fierce city rivals, but there home crown always makes a trip to the Vicente Calderon a difficult one and they will be especially fired up tonight, as will Diego Simeone and his players.

They are harbouring a burning sense of indignation and injustice because of their last two games. In the Bernabeu last week, Atletico feel that Diego Costa was targeted by Pepe, Sergio Ramos and Arbeloa and feel that at least two of them could have seen red.

It did seem that the decisions didn’t really go their way, but that was nothing compared to what happened to them at Almeria in La Liga on Sunday. Two of the Almeria players should have been sent off and, in separate incidents, Atletico should have had two penalties. They got none of these and then were punished further with a penalty and sending off for their keeper, which was also a bad decision.

So they will be seething tonight and will throw everything at Real. With Ramos and Pepe both one card away from missing the final, Ancelotti is very glad to have Rafael Varane back so he can rest one of them, probably Pepe.
