Real Madrid: Set to win a 12th European Cup this season?

Posted on August 18, 2016 by admin

Last season, Real Madrid defied the odds to win the UEFA Champions League in Zinedine Zidane’s first season as head coach of the first team. The Los Blancos legend stepped in after Rafael Benitez was sacked midway through the campaign and showed his worth as he led Madrid to an unprecedented 11th European Cup triumph. But now Real are on the hunt for number 12 – and everybody associated with the club will be quietly confident of defending their title this season…

If they perform at their very best, Real are capable of winning back-to-back European Cup titles but nobody has ever managed to achieve this feat since the Champions League was formed back in 1992. To be honest, Madrid may need to strengthen their squad in order to send out a statement of intent ahead of the new campaign. Twelve months ago, Real may have assumed they would sign David de Gea and Paul Pogba this summer. Unfortunately, they missed out on both players.

However, they are still one of the top clubs in European football – and the Spanish outfit have to be considered as one of the leading candidates based on last season’s form. At the time of writing, punters who are placing Betway bets on the 2016/17 competition can get 11/2 on Zidane’s men going all the way for the second year in a row. And with Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema upfront, it would be foolish to back against them. “BBC” are capable of unlocking and destroying the best defensive units on the planet…

In addition, Real have some of the most talented midfielders on the planet at their disposal and even the likes of Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid will struggle to cope with Zidane’s potent midfield unit. Luka Modric and Toni Kroos are fantastic footballers and they can lead Madrid back to the top of Europe for the second successive season. While most Real fans were disappointed to see Pogba move back to Old Trafford, they will rejoice in the knowledge that they have two phenomenal stars in their ranks.

The Champions League is an incredibly difficult competition to win and everybody needs a little bit of help with the draw. In recent years, the fixture list has been kind to Real Madrid but you have to beat the best to be the best – and Zidane will be wary of this. There are no easy matches in Europe’s elite club competition and Real cannot afford any room for complacency, especially in the knockout stages. Should Madrid take their foot off the gas, they will be prone to mistakes and could face elimination from the competition.

But that is very unlikely to happen. Zidane is already maturing into a world-class manager and he simply won’t stand for complacency or laziness – either on and off the field. The Real boss will expect every player to pull their weight and Zidane won’t be afraid to make a controversial substitution if required. The Frenchman hasn’t been in management for long but fans have already witnessed his ruthless streak on more than one occasion. Not even the great Cristiano Ronaldo is safe…

Real Madrid won’t find it easy but Los Blancos have what it takes to do the unthinkable and win back-to-back Champions League titles… just watch this space.
