Real Madrid sign Carvajal – Is Arbeloa finished?

I have long thought that Alvaro Arbeloa was a bit of a weak link for Real Madrid, and for the Spain national side as well. He was truly awful in the recent Confederations Cup final against Brazil. Maybe it is the ease with which the new Barcelona striker Neymar turned him inside out shows exactly why Real Madrid have chosen to use the buy-back option written into his contract when he was sold to Bayer Leverkusen just a year ago.

21-year old Carvajal came through the youth system at Madrid and played 68 times for the B team, but was not considered good enough for the first team and did not manage a single game. The talented defender made an instant impact in the German Bundesliga, however, and kept up a consistent and high level of performance.

Carvajal said, “Today I am the happiest person in the world.”

Carvajal is delighted to be back at his boyhood club and was visibly moved when he was announced the Florentino Perez at the Santiago Bernabeu today. I think that 30-year old Arbeloa may find himself on the bench a lot this season, and he may even decide to look for another club, especially after he put himself in an awkward position by criticising his team mates and the club captain Iker Casillas and offering his support to the departing Jose Mourinho. I can’t imagine that the Madrid dressing room and training ground will be a very happy place for him this season.
