Real Madrid silence critics with emphatic win over Athletico Madrid

There was talk of turmoil at Real Madrid before this local derby, as Real sat 14 points behind Barcelona at kick off and would have been 11 behind Athletico had they lost. They never looked like losing, however, and the 2-0 scoreline flattered Diego Simeone’s side. Ronaldo hit the woodwork twice and should have had at least a hat-trick rather than a single goal.

Mesut Ozil scored Real’s other goal, and the German international produced the kind of performance that was mystifying opponents last season. Jose Mourinho knew that some of the Madrid fans wanted to voice their displeasure at the poor start to the season, but the Portuguese manager did not want this to affect his players, so he came on to the pitch on his own 30 minutes before kick off and let the crowd whistle and boo him.

By the end of the game, there were nothing but cheers and happy fans as Real pulled themdselves to within six points of second place and showed that they are still a force to be reckoned with. Athletico never got into the game, and Falcao was kept quiet by the brilliant play of Alonso, Pepe and Ramos.
