Real Madrid star Ronaldo looking good for Ballon D’Or

The last four years, since he joined Real Madrid in 2010, have seen Cristiano Ronaldo take his football onto a whole different level. His scoring rate and all-round influence on games increased hugely and propelled the Portuguese star to the very pinnacle of world football.

However, Ronaldo will be understandably disappointed that his only Ballon D’Or award came while he was still playing for Manchester United. All of the awards since then have gone to the Barcelona player Lionel Messi, but this year the Argentinean is largely out of the running. He has just picked up an injury that will keep him out of action almost until the ceremony.

To be honest, Ronaldo should already have been a head of Messi, because he has raised his game this calendar year while Messi’s has dropped, so the Madrid man should be feeling confident. However, two more players are apparently still firmly in the running, Franck Ribery of Bayern Munich and Zlatan Ibrahimovic of PSG.

These are both excellent players who have had good years, but they are not in Ronaldo’s class. However, FIFA don’t seem that keen on Ronaldo, especially after what Sepp Blatter said recently, so Ronaldo will have to do much better than everyone else to win it.

The World Cup play-offs are therefore massive. Ronaldo’s Portugal play Ibrahimovic’s Sweden, while Ribery’s France play Ukraine. If Ronaldo can fire Portugal to next summer’s tournament in Brazil, it should be enough to seal the deal.
