Real Madrid stars fire Portugal and France to World Cup

We already knew that Real Madrid was blessed with some serious attacking talent, but there was a real danger that hardly any of those players would be at the World Cup in Brazil next summer. Angel Di Maria’s Argentina had already qualified and Gareth Bale’s Wales had fallen way short.

But the fact that Portugal and France had to qualify via the play-offs was surprising and both teams were on the brink after the first legs. France, especially, were on their way out after losing 2-0 in Ukraine. No European team had ever turned around that deficit, but France did it last night with a 3-0 win in Paris.

Karim Benzema was brought back into the starting line-up, and the Madrid man struck the second goal which levelled the tie. Benzema has been looking a lot better for Madrid recently and his confidence will have been boosted again by helping France to the World Cup.

The Portugal and Sweden play-off was billed as the battle between two stars of football, Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. But as Real Madrid fans know, there is no competition, and Ronaldo highlighted that with yet another brilliant hat-trick. Add that to his winning goal in the first leg and you have yet another reason why Ronaldo should be the clear winner of the Ballon D’Or.
