Real Madrid will NOT have it easy in Champions League

The draw for the Champions League group stages was yesterday, and I have read a few reports that say Real Madrid got a good draw, but I think this a bit short sighted. Maybe it is because the club were in the so-called group of death last season with Man City, Dortmund and Ajax, but this year’s is far from easy.

The Italian champions Juventus will always be a threat and they have added the firepower of the former Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente and the Argentinean froward Carlos Tevez this summer. This is a team that has won Serie A three times in a row and has bags of talent and European experience. Our Italian boss Carlo Ancelotti will be well aware of how dangerous an opponent they will be.

Then we have the Turkish champions Galatasaray. Madrid will travel to Istanbul to play them in the opening game on Tuesday September 17th, and we should underestimate them at our peril. It is not just the ferocious atmosphere that visiting teams face in Turkey that we should worry about, they have a serious team. Former Blanco Wesley Sneijder and Didier `the beast` Drogba supplement their Turkish stars and they recently beat Arsenal in London. They also got to the quarter-final stage last season, when we knocked them out despite losing in Turkey, but that away game was a warning.

The third team in Madrid’s group is Copenhagen, who are a good solid side that got through to the last 16 two years ago only to lose to the eventual champions Chelsea. Madrid should be able to beat them home and away, of course, but we cannot take anything for granted and must be careful to ensure we win the group.
