Borussia Dortmund extended the terrible form of Real Madrid in Germany by inflicting another defeat and leaving them with just a single win in 24 games on German soil. Ronaldo extended his great scoring form to seven games in a row but this time it did not herald a Real Madrid victory.
As well as the defeat, Jose Mourinho has another injury problem to deal with. Sami Khedira, who had just returned to the side from a hamstring problem, did not last 20 minutes against Dortmund after suffering an injury to his thigh. There is no news about the extent of the problem yet, but he is sure to miss at least one game.
Dortmund played with organisation and desire, but it was a mistake by Pepe to give the ball away that led to the opening goal. Lewandowski was a handful all night and struck the opener with style after 35 minutes.
Dortmund did not have time to enjoy their lead as a fantastic long ball found Ronaldo one on one with the keeper and there was only going to be one outcome. Modric had replaced Khedira and was accurate and lively in his work but Dortmund were relentless.
Schmelzer scored in the 65th minute and Madrid lost their lead in the group, they remain on six points but Dortmund now have seven. This makes the return game at the Bernabeu in two weeks a huge one for first place. Manchester City are all but out of the race after losing in Ajax.
