Carlo Ancelotti could afford to be magnanimous after seeing his Real Madrid side send out a warning to their Champions League rivals. It is always difficult to travel to Istanbul and the Turk Telecom arena, and Galatasaray kept the fervent and partisan crowd in full voice for most of the first half, but once Isco score towards the end of it, the pressure was released from the Madrid players.

In the second half, Galatasaray were given a masterclass in attacking, creative football and the art of finishing. Benzema doubled the lead before Ronaldo hit two in two minutes. The Portuguese wizard then turned provider for the French striker to get his second and Madrid’s fifth. Bulut finally gave the Turkish fans something to cheer about with a late consolation. The night belonged to Ronaldo, though, and there was still time for him to score the goal of the night, with some mesmerising footwork and a thunderbolt finish.

Ancelotti said after the game that the scoreline flattered his team, and the game was much tougher than the score suggests, but he must be absolutely delighted that his summer signing all played well, while his star man celebrated his new contract with such an imperious display. Gareth Bale came off the bench in the second half and already looks comfortable in the side. The Welshman also got an assist after a dangerous free-kick whipped into the box.
