Real Madrid have The Special One and he is Portuguese. His name is not Jose Mourinho, however, it is Christiano Ronaldo. CR7 was in majestic form last night, and he needed to be because Madrid were down to 10 men after 6 minutes. Jose Mourinho surprised everybody by leaving Iker Casillas on the bench. The captain had recently been voted the best keeper in the world for the umpteenth time in a row, but Mourinho claimed the move was for tactical reasons.
Casillas got on anyway, because it was his stand in, Adan, who was sent off, slightly harshly I thought. It was definitely a foul and a penalty, but not necessarily a goal scoring opportunity. Madrid were already ahead through a well taken Benzema goal, but Xavi Prieto sent Casillas the wrong way to level.
Madrid had to rely on their extra class, and Khedira had a fantastic game. The German put us back in the lead after 35 minutes, but Sociedad levelled again five minutes later with Prieto again.
It would be understandable if the Madrid players tired, but Ronaldo seemed to actually speed up as the second half wore on. His first goal came after a great run and excellent finish. Benzema supplied the perfect ball for him to latch on to. Minutes later, we had some daylight after Ronaldo lashed in a trademark free kick.
Prieto then got his hat-trick, but when Estrada was sent off, Sociedad never looked like drawing level. Ronaldo could have done no more to promote his case for the Ballon D’Or which is chosen today. Watch the highlights below.
