Ronaldo keeps pressure on Messi and fires Real Madrid 2nd

Real Madrid overtook Atletico Madrid for the first time this season with a 2-1 win over Celta Vigo (see highlights below). It was far from straightforward, but the man of the moment Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up once again and scored twice to secure the victory. The stand in keeper Diego Lopez also had a fantastic game between the sticks to prevent Celta causing an upset. Unfortunately the win did not close the gap on Barcelona at the top, but Ronaldo is closing the gap on Lionel Messi in the scoring charts.

Ronaldo is currently the top scorer in the Champions League, with eight goals in as many games. His double yesterday took him to 26 from 26 league games, and he has also netted six in the Copa Del Rey and two in the Spanish Supercopa. That puts him on 42 for the season, just nine behind Messi.

The Argentinean has slowed up a bit in 2013 while Ronaldo has started the year like a rocket. In the 16 La Liga games this calendar year, the Portuguese striker has hit 19 goals. With 11 games left it is a tall order for Ronaldo to catch Messi in the league, but he also has the Spanish cup final and more Champions League games, whereas Barcelona need a minor miracle to stay in against AC Milan.
