Ronaldo penalty miss cost Real Madrid scoring record

I do not think that any Real Madrid fans will be too hard on Cristiano Ronaldo today, but the Portuguese striker did fluff a great chance to hand Real Madrid another record last night. When CR7 stepped up to take a penalty to make it 3-0 on a col night in Copenhagen, nobody expected anything other than to see the net bulge. If it had, then Madrid would have set a new Champions League record of 21 goals in the group stage, but it was a poor penalty and we could only equal the record.

Ronaldo has today admitted to being a little lackadaisical when taking the spot kick, and it certainly looked like it. A little chipped penalty looks clever when it comes off, but looks a little daft if the keeper saves it, which he did. The fact that Ronaldo had already finished off a much more difficult chance made it stranger.

Or maybe not, because that goal put the striker on nine goals in the group stage, and that is a record. Beating the likes of Crespo, Inzaghi and Van Nistelrooy, Ronaldo has given yet another clear indication of why he must win the Ballon D’Or this year. Anything else would be a travesty.
