Real Madrid did not have to play almost the whole game with 10 men this time, but the sending off of Sergio Ramos in the Copa Del Rey last night nearly gave Jose Mourinho and the team an almighty headache. The Spanish champions are practically certain to lose their Primera Liga title this season, so they will be taking this competition seriously along with the top European Competition, in which Madrid are currently second in the Champions League Odds.
But Mourinho’s men nearly made hard work of it, and they were only 2-0 up when Ramos received a second yellow card with around 20 minutes to go last night giving Vigo the chance of a comeback.
If Celta Vigo had scored, which they nearly did, Madrid would have been taken into a gruelling 30 minutes of extra time to stay in the Copa Del Rey. As it happened, Casillas pulled off two great saves and Madrid hit the visitors on the break to finish the tie. Ronaldo scored his and Madrid’s third with a fantastic run and finish, then set up Khedira to score again to make it 4-0, which flattered us really.
Mourinho felt that the referee favoured Celta all night and was barely able to control his temper. The sending off of Ramos looked fair at first, but the replays showed that it was probably accidental. Ramos may face more than one game off, however, because he complained loudly to the referee who may include that in his match report.
Ronaldo put his disappointment about the Ballon D’Or behind him quickly and showed the Madrid faithful that they could have nobody better in the team than him. Hopefully he will sign a new contract to keep him at the Bernabeu for years to come.
